Advancing health equity research with a focus on language as a social determinant of health
The LangHealth Group is an open forum dedicated to advancing health equity research, with a particular focus on language as a social determinant of health. The group is primarily composed of researchers working in this area and meets virtually for one hour, twice a month, to discuss recent developments in language and health research, share knowledge dissemination opportunities, and present ongoing projects.
Presentations and discussions are held in both French and English to reflect the group's bilingual nature. The organization of this group is facilitated by both the Associate Vice President, Research and Scientific Director, Dr Sharon Johnston, and Research Chair in Language as a Social Determinant of Health, Dr Sathya Karunananthan, at Institut du Savoir Montfort.
Research Chair in Language as a Social Determinant of Health
Sathya Karunananthan is an Associate Professor in the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa and an investigator at the Institut du Savoir Montfort where she holds the Ottawa Academic Health Network Research Chair in Language as a Social Determinant of Health. Her research on health services focuses on improving access to care for older adults with complex health conditions, such as dementia, frailty, chronic pain and Parkinson's disease. She investigates disparities in care access among underserved communities, specifically, linguistic minority and racialized groups and studies the impact of health technologies like electronic consultation and artificial intelligence on inequities in access to care and health outcomes.
